British Diatom Meeting October 25th - 27th 2013

Dear all,

Here is some advanced notice of the British Diatom meeting 2013. This year the meeting is to be held at Blencathra Field Centre situated in the picturesque surroundings of the Lake District, running from dinner on Friday 25th October until lunch on Sunday 27th October. Please join us for a weekend of diatom talks, posters, collecting and identifying. The meeting is open to anyone interested in diatoms of any nationality, experience or diatom persuasion. We especially welcome postgraduates and new starters wishing to get a first experience of a friendly academic meeting.

Additionally, we are offering an introduction to freshwater biomonitoring short course on Friday 25^th immediately prior to the Diatom meeting enabling hands on diatom work and an introduction to rapid assessment techniques. This will be held at the Newton Rigg (15 miles from Blencathra) using the Eden Demonstration Test Catchment. The DTC’s are highly instrumented and intensively monitored catchments funded by DEFRA to address issues of diffuse pollution http://www.edendtc.org.uk/ . Central European Diatom & ADLaF joint meetings: 16-20 sept 2013 – registration open

Dear colleagues,

Registration for the 7^th Central European Diatom meeting (CE-Diatom) and the 32^nd conference of the French Speaking Diatomists Association (ADLaF) is now open at:

The meetings will be held in Thonon, 30 km from Geneva. The ADLaF conference will be held in French from Sept 16 to 18. The CE-Diatom meeting will then run from Sept 18 to 20 and will be in English. Your registration will enable you to attend both meetings.

Important deadlines:

15 June 2013: final day for abstract submission

15 August 2013: final day for registration

End of July 2013: notification to authors of the scientific committee decision

Meeting - The Molecular Life of Diatoms, 25 – 28 June 2013, Paris

Rapid progress in genomics and molecular genetics in selected model diatoms, together with the novel resources derived from modern oceanography and materials science are providing new opportunities to understand diatom biology and ecology, and to exploit them for biofuels and nanotechnology. This EMBO Workshop aims to be a platform to share the most recent research, establish new collaborations, and open up novel directions to fully harness the enormous potential of these fascinating organisms. 4th Polar Marine Diatom Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop, Cardiff University, United Kingdom: 4th – 9th August 2013

Following the great success of the first three Polar Marine Diatom Workshops in Yamagata, Nebraska and last year in Sydney, the 4^th Polar Marine Diatom Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop will be held at Cardiff University, United Kingdom, from 4^th– 9^th August 2013. Place these dates in your calendar, think about your travel plans, tell your friends and colleagues!!

The taxonomy and ecology workshops are very interactive with speakers bringing microscope slides for participants to examine and are excellent for the training and development of postgraduates and established researchers, alike.

If you are interested in receiving the first circular (probably in December 2012), or in offering a session based on your favourite diatom, please send an email to me, Jenny Pike (pikej@cardiff.ac.uk) and you will be added to the mailing list for all future registration and accommodation information regarding the workshop.

The 32nd meeting of the French Speaking Diatom Association (16-18 sept 2013) and the 7th Central European Diatom Meeting, Thonon-les-Bains, (18-20 sept 2013) will be held in Thonon-les-Bains.

The 22nd North American Diatom Symposium will be held from 13-17 August 2013 at the College of the Atlantic in scenic Bar Harbor, Maine, USA. The campus is located on the ocean, adjacent to Acadia National Park. International participants will present work on all aspects of diatom investigations including climate, biodiversity, evolution, ecology, systematics, biological assessment, and nanotechnology. Ballot papers are now being sent to all members by email and, for those members whose email addresses we do not have, by post. The deadline for return of ballot papers to the secretary is 13th August 2012.
